In Spring 2017, at the University of Cincinnati, my third year Industrial Design studio, and Assistant Professor, Stephen Slaughter’s architecture seminar course partnered for the first iteration of Section 001. Students were tasked with conducting research into a series of movements and trends, ranging from the Shakers to modern Japanese design. This research was synthesized into the formation of brand, consisting of material and color palettes, logo, website, etc. and ultimately into a suite of furniture and housewares. While the effort was collective across the entire course, each student was responsible for designing a physical piece of their own to fit within the brand. In addition, each student had roles within the brand including but not limited to content creation, art direction, social media strategy, booth design etc. The work generated in this collaborative course was shown at ICFF 2017, where it was awarded the Editors’ Choice Award for best school. Because of the success of this course both in content and format, it is now cemented into the curriculum of the school.
